PACE’s Standing Committee has warmly welcomed the draft Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence, as the first international binding instrument specifically devoted to this issue and as an important step forward for equality.
But in a resolution based on a report by José Mendes Bota (Portugal, EPP/CD), it also called for some changes to further strengthen the standards set out in the draft convention, including better protection for vulnerable groups, stronger sanctions against violence and less scope for reservations.
