Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly President Mevlüt Çavusoglu today warmly welcomed the imminent release of Azerbaijan opposition journalist Eynulla Fatullayev and others, following their pardon by the country’s President Ilham Aliyev.
“With Mr Fatullayev’s release, the authorities of Azerbaijan put an end to the injustice done to this journalist, who has already spent far too much time in prison, as the European Court of Human Rights rightly recalled one year ago, holding that this prison sentence violated his freedom of expression and of information protected by Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights and ordering his release”, Mr Çavusoglu said.
The PACE President underlined the fact that Mr Fatullayev’s release comes following repeated requests of the Parliamentary Assembly and himself.
