05/06/2012 Monitoring
Strasbourg, 04.06.2012 – While the political climate in Albania is still tense and antagonistic, there is clearly “a more constructive attitude” among all political forces, according to PACE’s monitoring co-rapporteurs for the country Tomáš Jirsa (Czech Republic, EDG) and Grigore Petrenco (Moldova, UEL).
In an information note on a visit to Tirana in April, made public this week, they report “this new sense of co-operation was clearly guided by the overarching wish of all parties that Albania receives EU candidate status by the end of the year”.
The ongoing presidential elections could play an important normalising role, they said – if the main political forces can come to a mutually acceptable candidate for the post of President. They also welcomed a “long overdue” change to the Constitution to reduce the excessive system of criminal immunity in Albania.
