08/10/2012 Political Affairs and Democracy
Strasbourg, 08.10.2012 - During a bilateral meeting with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, organised on the margins of the World Forum for Democracy, PACE President Jean-Claude Mignon invited the Secretary General to address the Parliamentary Assembly at a forthcoming session.
“The Secretary General highlighted the pioneering role played by the Council of Europe, and more particularly the Parliamentary Assembly, in combating violence against women, including domestic violence. He was confident that thanks to the legal framework created by the Council of Europe, there would be rapid progress in this area. He also underlined the key role played by the Parliamentary Assembly in promoting human rights and non-discrimination,” the PACE President said.
The PACE President and the Secretary General also exchanged views on co-operation between the Council of Europe, the United Nations and the OSCE, and discussed the main topics debated at the last PACE part-session – the honouring of obligations and commitments by the Russian Federation and the humanitarian situation in Syria – the so-called “frozen” conflicts, the Arab spring and, more particularly, the Partner for Democracy status recently created by PACE.
