11/02/2013 President
Strasbourg, 11.02.2013 - The President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), Jean-Claude Mignon, today firmly condemned an attack at the border between Turkey and Syria.
“According to the information available to us at the moment, there has been an explosion in a car close to the Turkish border post at Cilvezoglu, killing eight people and wounding around 30. This explosion is the most serious incident on the border between Syria and Turkey since the shellfire from Syrian territory that killed Turkish civilians in the Turkish border village of Akçakale early last October,” he said.
“We must do all we can to prevent violence from flaring up in the region and to ensure that acts of this kind, committed solely to spread terror, do not achieve that objective.
I call on all parties to prevent violence from escalating and to comply strictly with the rules of international law,” said the PACE President.
Jean-Claude Mignon offered his condolences to the victims’ families and friends.
