Strasbourg, 22.02.2013 – Jana Fischerová (Czech Republic, EDG) and Kerstin Lundgren (Sweden, ALDE), co-rapporteurs of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) who have been appointed to assess the request for the opening of a monitoring procedure in respect of Hungary – following a motion signed by 24 members of the Assembly in January 2011 – will make a fact-finding visit to Budapest on 25-27 February 2013.
During the visit they are due to have meetings with the Speaker of the National Assembly, the Deputy Prime Minister, the Minister of Public Administration and Justice, the Presidents of the Constitutional Court and the Supreme Court, and the Chairperson of the National Judicial Office. Discussions will also take place with representatives of political parties, the Hungarian delegation to PACE, the Ombudsman, NGO representatives and media authorities.
The co-rapporteurs have already made visits to the country in July 2011 and February 2012. Following their investigations, they will prepare for the PACE Bureau an opinion containing a draft decision proposing to open or not a monitoring procedure with respect to Hungary.
