Parliamentary contribution to solving the Western Sahara conflict: visit of the Rapporteur of the PACE

Strasbourg, 24.05.2013 - Liliane Maury Pasquier (Switzerland, SOC), Rapporteur on the parliamentary contribution to solving the Western Sahara conflict, of the Committee on Political Affairs and Democracy of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), currently on a visit to Rabat and to Laayoune (21-24 May 2013), has met with national and local Moroccan authorities, members of Parliament, representatives of the international community and Sahrawi civil society, as well as defenders of human rights.

“As this visit is only one stage in the elaboration of my report, I have neither made, nor wish to make, a declaration concerning possible conclusions. At this stage, I can only underline the necessity and the urgency of mobilising all the stakeholders, as well as the international community, to look for a just, long-lasting and mutually acceptable solution, within the framework of the United Nations, to the Western Sahara conflict”, declared the Rapporteur.

The Committee on Political Affairs and Democracy is due to organise a hearing on 4-5 September 2013 in Paris.
