Strasbourg, 11.10.2013 – Jean-Claude Mignon, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), today expressed his deep sadness at the death of Peter Schieder, who was President of the Assembly from 2002 to 2005.
“Peter Schieder, a passionate supporter of the European project and an ardent defender of the values embodied by our Organisation, passed away today. On behalf of the Assembly, I extend my sincere condolences to his family and all those dear to him.
Throughout the long period he spent as a member of our Assembly, and then as President, Peter Schieder strove to strengthen the parliamentary dimension of the Council of Europe and to see it firmly established as Europe’s moral authority. He maintained that by defending our values energetically and with conviction, people would take greater heed of our Organisation, and its message would be heard more closely. He promoted the monitoring mechanisms as a means of safeguarding our principles, spearheaded the modernisation of our procedures and worked to improve women’s representation in our Assembly Chamber.
We are all grateful to him for his passion, his commitment and his judgment, for which we express our full appreciation.”
