Are Europe’s core values under threat?

Are Europe’s core values under threat from the economic crisis? Are we seeing the erosion of the rule of law and the calling into question of fundamental rights? Is Europe itself setting a good example? How best to develop synergies between the Council of Europe and the EU in order to uphold these values? Those are the topics that will be discussed at a conference being held by the Robert Schuman Foundation under the auspices of PACE President Jean-Claude Mignon.

The conference, which is to be opened by the President of the Assembly, will be held on Wednesday 23 October from 2 to 6 pm at the Council of Europe (Room 5) in Strasbourg. Participants will include:

• Jean-Dominique Giuliani, President of the Robert Schuman Foundation
• Fabienne Keller, member of France’s Senate
• Constance le Grip and Jean-Paul Gauzès, members of the European Parliament
• Jean-Paul Costa, former President of the European Court of Human Rights and President of the International Institute of Human Rights
• Laszlo Trocsanyi, Hungary’s Ambassador in Paris and former member of the Venice Commission
• Nils Muiznieks, Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights
