Georgia’s successful Presidential election ‘an important achievement for the country’

Georgia’s October Presidential election was “efficiently administered, transparent and took place in an amicable and constructive environment,” said PACE’s observer delegation in a final report being debated today by the Standing Committee.

“Just one year after the parliamentary elections, Georgia’s citizens have again demonstrated their political maturity,” said the report, by Meritxell Mateu Pi (Andorra, ALDE), describing the election as “an important achievement for the country”.

The report called for further changes to Georgia’s election laws concerning the right to stand for election, funding of parties and campaigns and a wider representation of parties on electoral commissions.

The Standing Committee also regretted that two Russian members of the Assembly observer delegation had been unable to take part in the mission.
