Strasbourg, 02.12.2013 – José María Beneyto (Spain, EPP/CD), who is preparing a report for the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) on political transition in Egypt, begins a four-day visit to the country today (2-5 December 2013).
He is due to meet the Deputy Prime Minister, the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and of Justice and the Strategic Adviser to the President of the Republic, as well as the heads of different political parties and movements in the country. Audiences are also planned with the Grand Mufti of the Republic Shawky Allam and the head of the Coptic Orthodox Church His Holiness Pope Tawadros II.
PACE’s Political Affairs Committee has already held several exchanges of view in recent months with representatives of Egypt’s political forces.
The Assembly has regularly debated the situation in the region following the events of the “Arab Spring”, and Moroccan and Palestinian parliamentary delegations already take part in the work of the Assembly via “Partner for democracy” status.
