26/01/2014 Session
The Assembly is due to elect a new President on the first day of its winter plenary session, Monday 27 January. Two candidatures have been received: Anne Brasseur (Luxembourg, ALDE) and Robert Walter (United Kingdom, NI).
In order to be elected, a candidate must obtain a minimum of 159 votes – an absolute majority of the Assembly’s 317 Representatives – in the first or second round of voting. If this is not achieved, there is a third round and the candidate with the greatest number of votes is declared elected. The result should be announced between 1pm and 3.30pm.
The new President will serve for a one-year term, renewable once.
