Anne Brasseur: parliamentarians can give victims of trafficking a voice

Participating in a side event at the 58th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women at the UN in New York, PACE President Anne Brasseur called upon Parliamentarians to stand up and give a voice to victims of trafficking in human beings. “We as Parliamentarians can speak up loudly,” she said, “giving power to a voice that victims lack.”

“Trafficking is a genuine scourge of our societies. It is a modern form of slavery and one of the worst forms of violations of human rights, dignity and integrity,” Ms Brasseur said. She encouraged Governments to join the European Convention on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings. “This European Convention is open to countries from outside of Europe, it is in the interest of victims to use this Convention in tackling this global phenomenon.”
