Europe lags behind in its efforts to resettle refugees

Europe is lagging behind in its efforts to resettle refugees – with only 20 Council of Europe member states resettling only 5,500 people in 2013 – and should do a great deal more, according to PACE’s Migration Committee.

Approving a report by Eric Voruz (Switzerland, SOC), the committee said that although resettlement depends entirely on the voluntary participation of the receiving states, and some commendable efforts have been made, it is time to increase resettlement, relocation and humanitarian admission programmes.

EU and non-EU member states should work together on the issue, the committee suggested.
