PACE President to give keynote speech at Vienna conference on peace and democracy

Strasbourg, 14.03.2014 – Anne Brasseur, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), will give a keynote speech, along with European Parliament President Martin Schulz, at an international conference in Vienna on 17 March entitled “1914 – The Collapse of a Peace Order: is Democratic Peace an Alternative?”

Marking the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War, and organised by the Austrian Parliament and the Austrian Institute for International Affairs, the conference will bring together diplomats, academics and experts to look at what factors contribute to international peace and stability, and the relationship between democracy and peace. The role played by international organisations, such as the Council of Europe and EU, will also be discussed.

On the margins of the conference, the President will also meet the President of the Austrian National Assembly Barbara Prammer, the Secretary General of the OSCE Lamberto Zannier and the head of the EU’s Fundamental Rights Agency Morten Kjaerum.
