Ending child poverty must be a political priority

Following the proposals made by the rapporteur, Sevinj Fataliyeva (Azerbaijan, EDG), the Assembly today called on member States to make ending child poverty a political priority, and to maintain, even in times of crisis, an adequate level of budgetary resources for social services for families.

According to the resolution unanimously adopted, member States are also invited to draw on recent EU recommendations, to ensure that children have equal access to all resources and services they need, to help families out of the “cycle of poverty”, and to ensure equal opportunities for all children at a young age.

PACE also recommended that the Committee of Ministers give greater priority to the issue of child poverty in the implementation of different European standards for children's rights as well as in the preparation of the Council of Europe strategy for the rights of the child beyond 2015.
