PACE observers return to Skopje to assess the post-electoral situation

07.07.2014 – Two members of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) who observed the presidential and early parliamentary elections in “the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia” will return to the country from 9-11 July to assess the post-electoral situation.

Stefan Schennach (Austria, SOC) and Robert Walter (United Kingdom, EDG) are due to meet the Speaker of Parliament, representatives of different political parties and the head of the State Election Commission, as well as members of civil society.

Following the elections, PACE’s 13-member team of observers – in a joint statement with other international monitors – said that shortcomings during the campaign had overshadowed a generally well-run election day.

Mr Schennach, heading the PACE team, described the election as “a missed opportunity” for political stakeholders to demonstrate a genuine commitment to integrating ethnic communities and minorities in the country.
