Hostilities in the Gaza strip: violence will resolve nothing

The President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), Anne Brasseur, has today expressed her deep concern over the escalation of conflict in Israel and the Gaza strip.

“I express my condolences to the families of those who have been killed during the hostilities in recent days. Regardless of the tragic death toll, everyone should refrain from violent retaliation. The escalation of rhetoric that we are witnessing on both sides is irresponsible; it will not bring back the dead, but will only feed the violence. I really wonder: which forces benefit from this escalation, which destroys all the reconciliation efforts that Palestinians and Israelis have previously agreed?” asked Mrs Brasseur.

“Violence will resolve nothing. Even though all sides in the conflict certainly understand this, it seems, unfortunately, that they are not all willing to engage in meaningful dialogue. Meanwhile, people are dying and suffering. On behalf of the Assembly, I am calling on both sides to refrain from further bloodshed and not only to sit down at the negotiating table, but finally to agree on a sustainable peaceful solution.”

“The international community, the US and European states must take their responsibility and substantially reinforce their efforts to help Israelis and Palestinians stop the spiral of mutual provocation and break down the wall of hatred and mistrust that divides them.”
