The President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Anne Brasseur today decisively condemned the violations of the ceasefire in the east of Ukraine.
Ms Brasseur expressed her indignation that despite the ceasefire and numerous calls to respect it, fighting continued and the death toll was still on the rise: “Two days ago during our current affairs debate we called on all sides to stop violence and called for a thorough, impartial and effective investigation into killings and other human rights violations in order to bring those responsible to justice. Today I reiterate this call: peace is necessary and imperative, it is the only way to achieve respect for human rights and ultimately reconciliation.”
She added: “I am also deeply shocked and saddened by the news of the tragic death of one of the staff members of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Donetsk. The ICRC is a long-standing and reliable partner of our Assembly, and we express our sincere condolences to the family and colleagues of the deceased.”
