Anne Brasseur: improved protection for journalists

“Too many journalists have paid with their lives, sacrificed their safety or freedom to guarantee us access to information,” said PACE President Anne Brasseur, at the opening of a seminar on the protection of journalists and the eradication of impunity for crimes against them, jointly organised by the Council of Europe, the Centre for Freedom of the Media, UNESCO and the European Lawyers’ Union.

Ms Brasseur, who said that 56 journalists had been killed in 2014 – five of them in Ukraine – and 179 put in prison, pointed out that the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe had this year decided to set up an Internet platform to promote the protection of journalism and the safety of journalists.
