The rapporteurs on abolition of the death penalty and on the situation in Belarus for the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) have expressed deep concern at reports of the execution in Belarus of Alyaksandr Hrunou, believed to be the third this year.
Marietta Karamanli (France, SOC) and Andrea Rigoni (Italy, ALDE) said: “The death penalty is wrong, and is a clear violation of basic Council of Europe values. The way it is carried out in Belarus is particularly cruel. Mr Hrunou’s mother was reportedly not even given any advance warning of the execution, she simply received her son’s clothes through the mail. This is the wrong signal to send if Belarus wishes to establish closer relations with the Parliamentary Assembly.”
