Call for measures to overcome situations of poverty and social exclusion

The Assembly today called on European governments for measures to overcome situations of poverty, social exclusion and marginalisation. These targeted measures should focus on different age groups and consider the specific situation of working women and single mothers, as well as groups in need of special protection and support, in particular migrants, ethnic minorities and people with disabilities.

Policies aimed at fighting exclusion and marginalisation often neglect one crucial aspect: democratic participation as a civil and political right. For that reason the adopted text, based on a report prepared by Michael Hancock (United Kingdom, ALDE), calls for developing and implementing national agendas for inclusive democracy, aimed at ensuring democratic participation for marginalised groups.
