17/12/2014 Monitoring
Josette Durrieu (France, SOC), PACE Rapporteur on post-monitoring dialogue with Turkey, expressed her “profound concern” after the wave of arrests that took place last weekend, including arrests of journalists.
“These arrests once again raise the issue of media freedom in Turkey. They are a further development in the action taken in response to an anti-corruption operation launched just a year ago”, she declared.
Josette Durrieu pointed out that, on her last visit at the end of May 2014, she had already discussed with the Turkish authorities the adoption of new legislation on the media and the judiciary and their compatibility with Council of Europe standards.
She expects action from the Minister for Justice "to ensure respect for the rule of law and fundamental freedoms, including freedom of the press.”
