PACE President reacts to shooting of Boris Nemtsov in Moscow

"I am deeply shocked by the shooting in Moscow of Boris Nemtsov, a long-time interlocutor of the Council of Europe and a strong and clear voice in Russia’s opposition,” said Anne Brasseur, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).

“I note that this murder took place within a stone’s throw of the Kremlin, and I urge that the investigation be transparent, thorough and determined. For the democratic future of the country, a brutal political assassination of this kind cannot go unpunished,” she added.

“Mr Nemtsov - who I met several times - was a charismatic and courageous defender of democratic values who condemned violence, and Russia needs more of his kind. I extend my deepest sympathies to his family and those who worked with him.”
