Promoting the integration of Chinese migrants in Europe

“The increase in the Chinese population in Europe raises human rights concerns with regard to trafficking and smuggling rings, the lack of legal protection, and the poor work conditions these immigrants often face,” notes the PACE Committee on Migration, Refugees and Displaced Persons. However, legal Chinese immigration presents many opportunities for Europe, the committee stresses.

The report prepared by Thierry Mariani (France, EPP/CD), adopted today by the committee, outlines the history of Chinese migration to Europe, describing the successive waves of immigration before going on to consider present-day trends. It is estimated that 2.8 million Chinese citizens currently reside legally in the member States, with the largest groups living in Russia, France the United Kingdom and Italy.

The committee proposes a set of measures to foster the integration of Chinese communities and recommends increased co-operation between Europe and China, in particular to combat illegal immigration.
