PACE to observe the parliamentary elections in Turkey

A 29-member delegation of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), led by Tiny Kox (Netherlands, UEL), is in Turkey from 5 to 8 June to observe the conduct of the parliamentary elections, alongside observers from the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly and the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR).

The delegation will meet, in particular, representatives of political parties running in the elections, the Chairman of the Supreme Board of Elections, and representatives of civil society, the Radio and Television Supreme Council, and the media, before observing the voting on 7 June.

A member of the Venice Commission – the Council of Europe's group of independent legal experts – will provide legal support during the visit.

In a declaration dated 7 May, the PACE pre-electoral delegation stressed that the parliamentary elections of 7 June appeared to be highly competitive and would be a crucial moment for political life in Turkey, with a genuine choice of political options for the citizens.

A joint press conference (PACE - OSCE PA and OSCE/ODIHR) is scheduled on Monday, 8 June, at 13:30, in Kavaklidere rooms 1 and 2 of the Ankara HiltonSA Hotel, Kavaklidere Mh., Tahran Caddesi 12, Ankara.

Live stream of the press conference is available at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/turkey-parliamentary-press-conference, on the OSCE/ODIHR homepage at http://www.osce.org/odihr, and on the OSCE PA homepage at www.oscepa.org.
