PACE delegation makes pre-electoral visit to Belarus

A five-member delegation of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), led by Reha Denemeç (Turkey, EC), will carry out a pre-electoral mission to Belarus on 8-9 September, to assess the election campaign and political climate prior to the presidential election on 11 October.

In Minsk, the delegation is due to meet the Speaker of the Council of the Republic, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Chairperson of the Central Election Commission.

Talks are also scheduled with the main candidates standing for the election or their representatives, extra-parliamentary opposition leaders, the President of the State Television and Radio Company, and representatives of the media, NGOs and the diplomatic community.

A full 11-member delegation from the Assembly will return to the country to observe the voting.

The delegation will issue a statement at the end of the visit on Wednesday 9 September.
