In 2016, living in democracies where human rights are respected

In her New Year’s Message, PACE President Anne Brasseur deplored that 2015 was a difficult year for Council of Europe values on our continent. She expressed the hope that 2016 would be marked by the enjoyment of human rights and respect for the principles of the rule of law and democracy, for all persons in Europe and beyond.

“2015 was not a good year for the fundamental principles we defend in Europe,” said Ms Brasseur. She added: “We live in a world facing disruption and where on the European continent we see fundamental rights undermined and the rule of law too often threatened.”

In 2016, we will all have to act on our plans for a Europe totally respectful of Council of Europe values, to ensure that everyone can enjoy their fundamental rights as well as respect for the principles of democracy and the rule of law. It is primarily the responsibility of our elected politicians from the majority and the opposition to make all possible efforts to protect these values in our respective countries. The challenges before us in our democracies are great, but we should not give up. The rule of law and respect for human rights must guide us in the steps we take.

Best wishes for the New Year!
