PACE urges ‘rapid response’ health squads to handle international health emergencies

PACE has called for the creation of ‘rapid response’ forces to handle international health emergencies such as the Zika virus, Ebola or H1N1. “The world is woefully ill-prepared to handle international public health emergencies,” the Assembly warned in a resolution, based on a report by Silvia Eloisa Bonet (Andorra, SOC).

“New ways of working to face international health crises before they happen need to be explored urgently.” The WHO should be designated as the lead institution to handle such crises, with the powers and funding to deploy “rapid response” teams, working with national governments, other UN bodies, the EU or NGOs.
