Parliamentarians list steps to protect migrants from violence

PACE has spelled out a series of steps to protect migrants from violence – whether physical violence, labour exploitation, trafficking, sexual harassment, discrimination or hate speech.

Approving a resolution based on a report by Andrea Rigoni (Italy, ALDE), the Assembly said the best way to protect migrants was the opening of regular migration channels, the promotion of a positive image of migrants in politics and the media, and the development of social inclusion programmes.

States should consider the possibility of “reviewing and amending national laws with the aim of ensuring that irregular migration is not considered a criminal offence”.
