PACE delegation makes pre-electoral visit to Belarus

A five-member delegation of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), led by Gisela Wurm (Austria, SOC), will carry out a pre-electoral mission to Belarus on 9-10 August, to assess the election campaign and political climate prior to the parliamentary elections on 11 September.

In Minsk, the delegation is due to meet the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Chairpersons of the Standing Committees on International Affairs and on Human Rights, and the Chairperson of the Central Election Commission.

Meetings are also scheduled with the extra-parliamentary opposition leaders, the President of the State Television and Radio Company and representatives of the media, NGOs and the diplomatic community.

A full 12-member delegation from the Assembly will return to the country to observe the voting.
