Seminar in Helsinki on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Monitoring Committee

On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of its creation, the Monitoring Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) will organise a seminar on “The international legal order in a changing world: challenges for the monitoring procedure of the Parliamentary Assembly” on Tuesday 16 May in Helsinki.

The seminar will include the participation of Tarja Halonen, former President of Finland – who had initiated the creation of the Monitoring Committee – Sergio Bartole, member of the Venice Commission, former Professor at the University of Trieste, and Daniel Tarschys, former Secretary General of the Council of Europe and Professor at the University of Stockholm.

The Assembly's monitoring procedure helps Council of Europe member states to fulfill their promises to uphold the highest democratic and human rights standards. In order to ensure compliance with the obligations entered into by member States which are not subject to specific monitoring procedures, the Committee carries out periodic overviews. In this context, the Assembly recently issued a periodic review report on Finland.
