15/09/2017 Political Affairs and Democracy
PACE Political Affairs Committee chair Mogens Jensen has today joined a host of leaders from around the world to sign a global petition in support of stronger democracies – and urged other members of the Assembly to do the same.
Timed to coincide with International Democracy Day (15 September), the global petition – organised by the International Parliamentary Union (IPU) – urges everyone do more to defend democracy by voting, speaking out against human rights violations, opposing laws gagging free speech or joining an NGO.
"Democracy today is under attack. We must redouble our efforts to defend it," said Mr Jensen. "This is a responsibility of every one of us who believes that our opinion matters, and who cares about the future of our society.”
