The Legal Affairs Committee today held a hearing on “Daphne Caruana Galizia’s assassination and the rule of law, in Malta and beyond: ensuring that the whole truth emerges”.
The hearing was organised in the context of the report being prepared by Pieter Omtzigt, (Netherlands, EPP/CD), with the participation of Jonathan Price (Barrister, Doughty Street Chambers, London), Tony Murphy (Partner, Bhatt Murphy Solicitors, London) and Jules Giraudat (International Co-ordinator of the "Daphne Project").
A second hearing is scheduled in January 2019 with the participation of representatives of the Maltese authorities.
The committee has also requested a Venice Commission opinion on Malta’s constitutional arrangements on the separation of powers and the independence of the judiciary and law enforcement bodies.
Mr Omtzigt will visit Malta in the week of 22 October 2018, when he hopes to meet representatives of the political, judicial and law enforcement authorities and other interlocutors.
