Pieter Omtzigt (Netherlands, EPP/CD), who is preparing a report for the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) on “Daphne Caruana Galizia’s assassination and the rule of law, in Malta and beyond: ensuring that the whole truth emerges”, arrives on the island today for a four-day fact-finding visit (22-25 October 2018).
He is due to meet the Prime Minister and the Minister for Justice, Culture and Local Government, as well as the Chief Justice, Attorney General, Police Commissioner and Ombudsman. Meetings are also foreseen with the members of Malta’s Financial Services Authority and the country’s Permanent Commission against Corruption, as well as the Director of the Financial Intelligence Analysis Unit.
Mr Omtzigt is also due to hold exchanges of view with journalists, civil society representatives, and experts on the rule of law and constitutional reform in Malta. Finally, he will meet Daphne Caruana Galizia’s widow Peter Caruana Galizia, and will visit the memorial to the assassinated journalist in Valletta.
