Promoting international student mobility in Europe

PACE’s Standing Committee, meeting today in Helsinki, called on member States to promote student mobility to and from their countries, through a set of measures on tuition fees, accreditation of diplomas and compatibility between education systems.

By adopting a resolution based on the report by Alexander [The Earl of] Dundee (United Kingdom, EC), the parliamentarians stressed that these measures would also help international students find jobs in the countries where they studied, and feel welcomed by the host countries.

The Standing Committee believes that student mobility can be beneficial for member States’ education systems and economies, as the inclusion of international students brings greater diversity and broader skills. In terms of data collection, States should agree on consistent definitions of student mobility, and distinguish statistics on international students from those on all other migrants, concludes the adopted text.
