The President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), Liliane Maury Pasquier, paid tribute to Ludmilla Alexeeva, a long-time Russian human rights defender and winner of the 2015 Václav Havel Human Rights Prize, who died in Moscow today.
"Ludmilla Alexeeva moved us during her speech to the Assembly three years ago. Her strong message had come to us with the same strength that has inspired generations of activists in Russia and abroad. Her commitment to the struggle for justice had guided her throughout her life, despite threats and persecution. She had denounced human rights violations in the Soviet Union for decades, and more recently worked at the Moscow Helsinki Group to denounce human rights violations, offering assistance to victims. Her lifelong commitment will be remembered”.
