Strengthening co-operation with the UN in implementing the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda

PACE has decided to strengthen dialogue with the United Nations, focusing on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development – adopted by the UN in 2015 – and on the complementarity between the Council of Europe and the UN, including with its agencies based in Geneva and Vienna.

“It is essential to strengthen mutual support between the United Nations, as a global Organisation, and value-based regional partners such as the Council of Europe,” the parliamentarians said. “The Council of Europe can, in addition, facilitate the effective translation of global sustainable development policies into concrete action at national level,” they added, calling on member States to fully honour their commitments to the SDGs.

“Parliaments must also play an active role, in setting priorities, ensuring progress and contributing to the monitoring and evaluation of national efforts to implement the SDGs,” the Assembly said, adopting a resolution based on the report by Adão Silva (Portugal, EPP/CD). The United Nations, for its part, should draw greater benefit from the Council of Europe's experience in human rights, parliamentary democracy and the relevant standards, says the adopted text.

PACE will regularly review the implementation of SDGs and fully play its role as a platform for exchanging national good practice.
