PACE rapporteur Pieter Omtzigt reacts to recent developments in Malta

Pieter Omtzigt (the Netherlands, EPP/CD), rapporteur on ‘the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia and the rule of law in Malta and beyond: ensuring that the whole truth emerges’, today issued a statement taking stock of recent events in Malta and looking forward to the future.

In his statement, Mr Omtzigt reviews the main developments in the criminal investigation and the related political context, describing the involvement of key figures including the alleged middleman Melvin Theuma and mastermind Yorgen Fenech, and of senior government officials Keith Schembri, Konrad Mizzi and Chris Cardona – as well as Prime Minister Joseph Muscat’s wide-ranging involvement and influence, and his conflict of interests.

He then welcomes today’s announcement of Prime Minister Muscat’s resignation as “belated recognition of his political responsibilities and a necessary step to allow investigations into the murder and other serious offences to proceed free of the stench of political interference”.

Mr Omtzigt’s statement concludes with a series of calls for action in Malta to ensure that justice is done and the whole truth emerges.
