COVID-19 and violence during lockdown: governments urged to apply the Istanbul Convention

With violence against women increasing during the COVID-19 lockdown, parliamentarians and experts from across the international community came together in an online conversation on Europe Day (5 May) to urge governments to tackle this “dramatic situation” by fully implementing the measures laid out in the Council of Europe’s Istanbul Convention.

The virtual meeting, organised by PACE’s Equality and Non-discrimination Committee, brought together a wide range of experts from the Council of Europe, the UN, the EU, national authorities and NGOs dealing with violence against women.

Participants took stock of the situation, pointing out that women are obliged to spend more time with abusive partners while at the same time they may lack access to helplines and shelters, and underlined once again the protective and preventive measures possible under the Convention.
