Following the passing away of Cheryl Gillan (United Kingdom, EC/DA), Chairperson of the Assembly's Political Affairs Committee, PACE President Rik Daems made the following statement:
"I was deeply saddened to learn about the passing away of Dame Cheryl Gillan. A most dedicated European and a tireless champion of democracy, Dame Cheryl was a bright and remarkable member of the British Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe since 2013. She was also a member of the Bureau of the Parliamentary Assembly and Vice-Chairperson of the European Conservatives Group and Democratic Alliance.
Dame Cheryl led, with efficiency, wisdom and ethos, the work of the Committee on Political Affairs and Democracy as Chairperson of the Committee. For this important duty, she relentlessly upheld the democratic values and the principles of parliamentarism which our Assembly stands for.
A committed defender of democracy, rule of law and human rights but also an inspirational woman for us all as well as a compassionate and caring colleague and dear companion with a great sense of humour, she will be sorely missed by all her friends in Strasbourg."
