Luigi Di Maio: 'Effective multilateralism is the driving force behind our Presidency'

“Effective multilateralism is the driving force behind our Presidency, which has prompted us to develop an ambitious programme that will include more than thirty events over the six months, with the aim of advancing the work of the Council of Europe,” said Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio, Chair of the Council of Europe Committee of Ministers, addressing the members of the Standing Committee today in Rome.

The Italian Presidency, he said, will focus in particular on three priority areas: encouraging a renewed commitment to the shared values of the Council of Europe, “starting with the protection of human rights, democracy and the rule of law”; promoting the rights of women and young people, “who are particularly exposed to violations and discrimination, even more so in the context of the pandemic”; and building a 'people-friendly' future, notably by “addressing the challenges posed by new technologies”.

“We hope to work with the Parliamentary Assembly throughout the semester in a fruitful and constructive manner, in order to advance the programme outlined and achieve our common goals,” Mr di Maio underlined. “Your contribution and input will also be crucial in ensuring the necessary link between principles, objectives, instruments and results,” he concluded.
