Jacques Maire (France, ALDE), PACE rapporteur on the arrest and detention of Alexei Navalny, has reacted to today's sentencing of Mr Navalny to nine years in prison for 'fraud' and 'offending a court'.

“I deplore this new conviction of Mr Navalny, who has been imprisoned for more than a year on the basis of a decision deemed contrary to the European Convention on Human Rights,” he said.

“He could be transferred to a harsh prison colony to serve this additional sentence. I reiterate once again my call on the Russian authorities to respect Mr Navalny's human rights, including his right to dignified conditions of detention, and to end his current detention in accordance with the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights, which remain binding on the Russian Federation."
