PACE Middle East rapporteur welcomes Lebanon ceasefire

Dora Bakoyannis (Greece, EPP/CD), PACE’s rapporteur on the situation in the Middle East, made the following statement today:

“The ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon, which is taking effect today, marks a significant step toward stability in the Middle East.

This agreement, facilitated by the USA and France, is a testament to the power of diplomacy and the international community's commitment to peace. The ceasefire not only halts immediate violence but also lays the groundwork for addressing underlying issues that have fuelled conflict in the region. It is imperative that all parties honour their commitments to maintain this fragile accord.

While this ceasefire is a positive step, it is but the beginning of a broader journey towards lasting peace in the Middle East. We must continue to support initiatives that promote dialogue, reconciliation, and development. The Parliamentary Assembly stands ready to assist in these efforts, recognising that sustained peace requires ongoing commitment and co-operation from all stakeholders.”
