PACE President makes official visit to Morocco

PACE President, Mevlüt Çavusoglu, is to make an official visit to Morocco from 19 to 22 December. On 20 December, in Rabat, he will meet the Speaker of the House of Councillors Mohamed Cheikh Biadillah, the Speaker of the House of Representatives Abdelwahed Radi, the Minister of the Interior Taib Cherkaoui and the Minister for Foreign Affairs and of Cooperation Taieb Fassi Fihri.

PACE and Venice Commission have complementary roles

PACE President welcomes Bulgaria’s strong determination to fight corruption

PACE President Mevlüt Çavusoglu has welcomed the strong determination of Bulgarian authorities to fight corruption and organised crime, an outstanding issue in the Parliamentary Assembly’s “post-monitoring dialogue” with Bulgaria. The President was speaking mid-way through a three-day official visit to the country (8-10 December), during which he met the country’s President, Speaker of Parliament and Foreign Affairs and Justice Ministers, among others.

During his visit, he is due to meet in particular the Speaker of the National Assembly Tsetska Tsacheva, the President of the Republic Georgi Parvanov, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikolay Mladenov and the Minister of Justice Margarita Popova.

“Finland has very strong democratic traditions and it has always been a fervent promoter and defender of the Council of Europe and its values,” PACE President Mevlüt Çavusoglu said today in his speech to the Finnish Institute for International Affairs as part of his official visit to Finland (24-27 November). “It is an example for many other European countries as a leader in fields such as the fight against discrimination, the rights of minorities, Roma rights and the fight against corruption, and it holds records in women’s rights.”

PACE President meets new member of Bosnian Presidency in Ankara

PACE President Mevlüt Çavusoglu met Bakir Izetbegovic, Bosniak member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, today in Ankara, and congratulated him on his recent election to the tripartite Presidency. In talks, the President pointed out that Bosnia and Herzegovina was “seriously lagging behind” in the implementation of its post-accession commitments to the Council of Europe, a matter for disappointment, but welcomed Mr Izetbegovic’s stated ambition to fulfil these commitments as soon as possible.

PACE memorial forest in Antalya symbolises stronger Turkey-Europe relations

A memorial forest of 2500 pine and locust trees has been planted in Dösemealti, near Antalya, to symbolise stronger relations between Turkey and the European institutions, as well as to honour the first ever election of a Turkish president to head PACE. Mevlut Cavusoglu, who was elected President in January 2010, is a deputy from the Antalya region.

PACE President supports priorities of the Turkish Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers

In his speech on the occasion of the handing over of the Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers from “the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia” to Turkey, PACE President Mevlüt Çavusoglu welcomed the priorities of the Turkish Chairmanship. He added that they went in the same direction as those of PACE.
