Mailis Reps (Estonia, ALDE) and Marietta de Pourbaix-Lundin (Sweden, EPP/CD), PACE co-rapporteurs for the monitoring of Ukraine, will visit former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko in Kharkiv on 16 May, as well as meeting her lawyers. They will also talk to the lawyers of the imprisoned former government ministers, Yuriy Lutsenko and Valeriy Ivashchenko. These meetings will be held during a monitoring visit by the co-rapporteurs (15-17 May), the purpose of which is to assess the implementation of PACE Resolution 1862 (2012) on the functioning of democratic institutions in Ukraine.

The PACE co-rapporteurs for the monitoring of Russia, Andreas Gross (Switzerland, SOC) and György Frunda (Romania, EPP/CD), have expressed their concern at the violence which followed the mass demonstration in Moscow on the eve of the presidential inauguration, and the detention of more than 250 participants.

PACE co-rapporteurs for the monitoring of Ukraine, Mailis Reps (Estonia, ALDE) and Marietta de Pourbaix-Lundin (Sweden, EPP/CD), have welcomed the adoption by the Verkhovna Rada yesterday of the new Code of Criminal Procedure for Ukraine. Given the extraordinarily large number of amendments that were tabled to the original draft, the co-rapporteurs especially welcomed the pledge of the President of Ukraine that he will only sign this code into law after having received assurances from the Council of Europe that it is fully in line with European standards and norms.

Mailis Reps (Estonia, ALDE) and Marietta de Pourbaix-Lundin (Sweden, EPP/CD), PACE monitoring co-rapporteurs for Ukraine have welcomed plans to address structural deficiencies in the Ukrainian justice system, such as the draft Code of Criminal Procedure, but stressed that these plans now need to be adopted and, most importantly, implemented.

In Tirana, they are due to meet the President of the Republic Bamir Topi, the Prime Minister Sali Berisha and the Minister of Justice Eduard Halimi.
