A delegation of parliamentarians, led by the Vice-Chairperson of the PACE Sub-Committee on the Europe Prize, Axel Fischer (Germany, EPP/CD), presented on 12 August the 2012 Europe prize to the Mayor of the Italian town of Corciano, Nadia Ginetti. The ceremony was attended by the mayors of Corciano’s twin cities, mayors of last year winning towns – Hünfeld (Germany) and Landerneau (France) – and the President of the Congress' Chamber of Local Authorities, Jean-Claude Frecon.

The Italian town of Corciano (province of Perugia) will receive the 2012 Europe Prize at a ceremony on Sunday 12 August at 5.30 pm (Piazza Coragino), to be attended by the public, local personalities and the mayors of its three twin-towns, Pentling in Germany, Civrieux d'Azergues in France and Libiaz in Poland. On this occasion, a delegation of parliamentarians, led by the Vice-Chairperson of PACE Sub-Committee on the Europe Prize, Axel Fischer (Germany, EPP/CD), will present the prize to Corciano’s Mayor, Nadia Ginetti.

PACE President Jean-Claude Mignon, the Chairperson of the European Museum Forum (EMF) Goranka Horjan, and Strasbourg City Councillor Nicolas Matt, have awarded yesterday evening the 2012 Museum Prize to the Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum (Cologne), represented by the museum director, Prof. Dr. Klaus Schneider.

The Council of Europe Museum Prize for 2012 has been awarded to the Rautenstrauch‐Joest‐Museum in Cologne (Germany) by PACE Committee on Culture, Science and Education. The Rautenstrauh‐Joest‐Museum is an anthropological museum of more than a century old, now in a high quality new building in Cologne, Germany.

The 2011 Europe Prize was awarded last Saturday to the French town of Landerneau in Brittany, in the presence of many local and regional officials, and a parliamentary delegation led by the Chairman of the PACE Sub-Committee on the Europe Prize Axel Fischer.

The French town of Landerneau (Brittany) will receive the 2011 Europe Prize at a ceremony on Saturday 15 October, which will bring together a large public and local personalities in the town’s concert hall, “The Family”. On this occasion, a delegation of parliamentarians, led by the Chairman of the PACE Sub-Committee on the Europe Prize, Axel Fischer (Germany, EPP/CD), will present the prize to Landerneau’s Mayor, Patrick Leclerc.

The German town of Hünfeld (Hesse) received the 2011 Europe Prize at a ceremony on Saturday 27 August which brought together a large public and local personalities. The 2011 Europe Prize has been awarded jointly to the town of Hünfeld and its French twin-town, Landerneau. The presentation ceremony in Landerneau will take place on 15 October 2011.

At the end of a special debate on the state of human rights in Europe, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) today presented its 2011 Human Rights Prize to the Russian NGO “Committee against Torture” (Komitet Protiv Pytok), in recognition of the organisation’s key role in assisting victims of serious human rights abuses.

The President of the PACE Committee on the Environment, Agriculture and Local and Regional Affairs, Dimitrios Papadimoulis (Greece, UEL), and the Chairman of the Sub-Committee on the Europe Prize, Axel Fischer (Germany, EPP/CD), awarded today mayors of 18 prize-winning municipalities with the European Diploma 2011, on the occasion of a ceremony attended by some 100 participants.

“In establishing the Europe Prize in 1955, the aim of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe was to demonstrate, through a political decision, the importance it attaches to the European action of local authorities,” said PACE President Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, speaking today in Ankara, on the occasion of the General Assembly of the Association of Towns awarded the Europe Prize.

The 2011 Europe Prize has been awarded jointly to the towns of Landerneau (France) and Hünfeld (Germany). This decision was taken unanimously by the Committee on the Environment, Agriculture and Local and Regional Affairs of the Council of Europe’s Parliamentary Assembly (PACE) at its April plenary session in Strasbourg.

PACE today decided to award its 2011 Human Rights Prize to the Russian NGO “Committee against Torture” (Komitet Protiv Pytok), in recognition of the organisation’s key role in assisting victims of serious human rights abuses. This is the second time the 10,000-euro biennial Prize, which honours “outstanding civil society action in the defence of human rights in Europe”, has been awarded.
