Position of Greek nationals in exile following the 1967 coup d'Etat

Resolution 508 (1972)

Author(s):
Parliamentary Assembly
Origin
Assembly debate on 20 January 1972 (17th Sitting) (see Doc. 3058, report of the Committee on Population and Refugees). Text adopted by the Assembly on 20 January 1972 (17th Sitting).

The Assembly,

1. Recalling its Recommendation 602 (1970) on the position of Greek refugees, and regretting that the first six proposals of paragraph 6 thereof, which the Committee of Ministers has transmitted to the governments of member States inviting them to give effect as far as possible to these proposals, have not yet been applied in the manner desired by the Assembly ;
2. Considering that the Committee of Ministers did not agree to the seventh proposal made in paragraph 6 of that recommendation, for the joint payment of a sum of $ 100 000 to the Council of Europe Resettlement Fund for the purpose of improving the situation of Greeks who left their country for political reasons after the 1967 coup d'Etat ;
3. Considering that humanitarian assistance is required by a certain number of persons of Greek origin in exile in the Council of Europe member States whose situation is similar to that of refugees, but who, for reasons frequently beyond their control, are not in a position to claim refugee status,
4. Invites its members to take all necessary steps with their governments and within their respective parliaments in order to encourage member States of the Council of Europe to make available to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees financial contributions, outside his regular Material Assistance Programme, for transmission under the High Commissioner's good offices functions to appropriate social agencies concerned with providing aid to the above-mentioned group of persons.
