Prolonging the existence of the Committee on Population and Refugees

The Assembly,

Having ascertained that since the adoption of Resolution 105 (25th October 1956), providing for the dissolution of the Committee on Population and Refugees and its absorption by the Social Committee, events have proved that the refugee problem, far from nearing a solution as it was hoped in 1956, may at any moment surge up again and even become more acute;

Convinced that such a state of affairs may go on indefinitely and in any case may continue for a very long time;

Considering that in these circumstances public opinion would not understand and would be likely to put a most unfavourable interpretation upon the dissolution of the Committee on Population and Refugees;

Considering that the Social Committee, already heavily burdened with work, would be unable to take on the additional important tasks of considerable political and humanitarian significance already falling or which might fall upon the Committee on Population and Refugees;

Taking the view that in such circumstances it would be impossible for a Subcommittee of the Social Committee to replace the Committee on Population and Refugees,

Decides to insert between sub-paragraphs 5 and 6 of paragraph 1 of Rule 40 of its Rules of Procedure the following subparagraph :

" Committee on Population and Refugees ".
