Olena Khomenko (Ukraine, ECPA), Chairperson of the Parliamentary Network on the situation of the children of Ukraine, made the following statement :
“Russian forces have once again targeted civilian infrastructure, this time striking a maternity hospital in Kyiv. During the overnight attack on 23-24 September, the building was damaged and now has to accommodate mothers and newborn children with windows destroyed by the explosion impact, right as the cold autumn period begins. Mothers and babies spent the night in the basement during the missile strikes, but one person was killed in the hospital courtyard.
This horrific incident reminds the world that children and hospitals are still seen by Russia as war targets. I strongly condemn this deliberate attack on civilian infrastructure and all other acts of violence against the civilian population. An attack on a maternity hospital is a particularly cynical violation of the most basic norms of international law.
Increasing pressure on the Russian Federation and holding those responsible accountable for their crimes is the only way to stop the terror against Ukrainian civilians, including the children and babies who will be the future of the country. We will continue to seek means to safeguard Ukrainian children and their families amidst the Russian aggression, and to ensure justice for every child affected by this war.”
